A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
