The speculation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
